As we all knows that iOS 5.1 firmware update has been released by Apple along with next generation iPad the “new iPad”. The new firmware update brings a lot of new features including Japanese language support for Siri, new lock screen with permanent camera button and some major bug fixes including famous battery drainage issue which was first reported in iOS 5. Apple rolled out iOS 5.1 update for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G, iPad 1, iPad 2, and iPad 3. An OTA update of latest iOS 5.1 was also released by Apple for iOS device who were already running iOS 5.0.1.
If you are already updated your iDevice iOS firmware to iOS 5.1 and now due to many reason you want to downgrade your iOS firmware back to 5.0.1 or 4.x.x then you can downgrade to 5.0.1 or 4.x.x firmware. Alos keep in mind that Only the iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1 and the iPod touch users can downgrade back to both iOS 5.0.1 (custom firmware only) and iOS 4.x as long as they have saved SHSH blobs for the firmware they are downgrading to. iPad 2 users can only downgrade back to iOS 4.x as long as they have saved SHSH blobs for it. iPhone 4S cannot be downgraded to an earlier version of iOS, unless Apple is signing that particular firmware version to which you’re downgrading to.
Downgrade iOS 5.1 To 5.0.1 with iFaith:
Things you have to download first.
- Download latest version of iFaith from here.
- Download iOS 5,0.1 firmware files for you iDevice from here.
Step 1: After downloading iFaith fromthe above links install it on your PC and open it. Now build a signed firmware file by clicking on ‘Build *signed* IPSW w/Blobs’.
Step 2: Browse for the SHSH blobs file that you previously download or saved for your current device to downgrade back to the old 5.0.1/5.0 firmware.
Step 3: iFaith will ask you to select the stock firmware of which you want it to create custom firmware file from. Once done, iFaith will have a new custom firmware file for you waiting on the desktop with SHSH blobs incorporated for the firmware you are downgrading to.
Step 4: Now enter DFU mode using iFaith and then simply use iTunes to restore to this custom firmware file.
Downgrade iOS 5.1 To 5.0.1, 5.0, 4.3.3, 4.3.5 with latest version of Redsn0w:
Things you need to download first:
- Download latest version of Redsn0w from here.
- Saved SHSH blobs of the iOS version you’re downgrading to.
- Latest version of iTunes download from here.
- Download iOS 4.3.5, iOS 4.3.4, iOS 4.3.3 iPSW firmware files from here
Step 1: Download and install Redsn0w on your PC and open it up.
Step 2: Next, click on Extras and then click on Pwned DFU option on the next window. Make sure your iDevice connected to the PC and switched off.
Step 3: Now put your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad in DFU by following on screen instructions:
To enter DFU mode:
Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds
You device should now be in DFU mode (black screen)
Step 4: Now edit your hosts file before restoration process in order to trick iTunes to make it communicating with Saurik’s servers rather than Apple servers. In order to do that Windows users go to \Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ and Mac users need to launch Finder and navigate to /etc/.
Step 5: Now open hosts file on Notepad and add following information “188.8.131.52 gs.apple.com” into it and save it in the same folder.
Step 6: Now open iTunes and select your device on the left pane. Hold down Shift (Win) or Alt (OS X), click Restore and locate your elected iOS 4.x iPSW from the first step and ignore Error 10xx if it pops up.
Step 7: In final step iTunes will as you to select the firmware you want to restore, point iTunes to your desired firmware and sit back iTnes will downgrade your iDevice iOS firmware to your required iOS firmware.
