How To Jailbreak iOS 5.1 On iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad With Redsn0w 0.9.10b6

After the release of iOS 5.1 firmware by Apple,  iPhone Dev-team has also released an software update to popular jailbreak solution Redsn0w. The new version number for Redsn0w is 0.9.10b6  and now supports a tethered jailbreak for all A4 devices including iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G and iPad 1 running iOS 5.1 firmware. Unfortunately current Redsn0w version only support A4 devices and A5 devices including iPhone 4S and iPad 2 are supported by this version. So, it our recommendation for A5 idevices owners to stay away from iOS 5.1 firmware.

If you rely on iPhone carrier unlock then do not update to the stock iOS 5.1 firmware. This jailbreak is tethered which means you have to connect your idevice to computer every time it restarts to boot it in jailbroken state.

How To Jailbreak iOS 5.1 With Redsn0w 0.9.10b6:

Things you need to download first:

  1.  Download the latest version of iTunes 10.6 from here.
  2.  Download firmware to iOS 5.1 files from here.
  3.  Download Redsn0w 0.9.10b6  for Windows
  4.  Download Redsn0w 0.9.10b6  for Mac

First of all open up iTunes and backup you iDevice.

Step 1: Now download Redsn0w on your PC and open it up. Windows users should open RedSn0w in Administrator mode. Click on Jialbreak option in Redsn0w Window.

Step 2: Now put your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad in DFU by following on screeninstructions:

To enter DFU mode:

  • Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
  • Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds
  • You device should now be in DFU mode (black screen)

Step 3: Redsn0w will automatically detect the firmware version on your iOS device and start the kernel patching process.

Step 4: After completing some process a new window will open and check install Cydia option and click on Next.


Step 5:
Now Redsn0w will start jailbreak process on your iDevices running iOS 5.1 firmware and you just have to wait for the completion of jailbreak process.

As we told you before that this jailbreak is tethered and you need to  launch Redsn0w, select “Extras”, then”Just Boot” in order to boot your device tethered.

Follow on screen instruction to put your iDevice in DFU Mode and tethered boot. All done, you have successfully jailbroken your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running on iOS 5.1 firmware.

Important Warning: If you use GEVEY SIM or Ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone then you will need to create a custom .iPSW, in order to preserve your baseband. You can preserve your baseband using Redsn0w from “Extras”, then “Custom IPSW”, locate your iOS 5.1 file and RedSn0w will automatically preserver your baseband.
